Gravel Calculator
Enter area and depth to get cubic yards and tons of gravel, crushed stone, or aggregate for a driveway, path, or base layer.
Area
Driveways: 4–6" total over base. Paths: 2–3". Drainage: 3–4".
You'll need
Gravel
0 yd³
0 cubic feet
Weight (approx)0 tons
Gravel weighs roughly 1.4 tons per cubic yard (varies by stone). Order by the yard or ton from the quarry.
How to calculate gravel
Volume in cubic feet is area × (depth ÷ 12); divide by 27 for cubic yards. Multiply yards by ~1.4 to estimate tons. Order a little extra for compaction and uneven subgrade.
Scope driveways and hardscape on-site
ProBuildCalc turns your iPhone's LiDAR scanner into a job-site measuring kit — walk the space and it captures the square footage, material takeoff, and a blueprint automatically. No tape measure, no graph paper.
Gravel calculator FAQ
- How much gravel do I need?
- Multiply area × depth (in feet) for cubic feet, divide by 27 for cubic yards. A 20×10 ft path at 3 inches deep needs about 1.85 cubic yards.
- How many tons of gravel are in a cubic yard?
- Gravel weighs roughly 1.4 tons per cubic yard, though it varies from about 1.3 to 1.5 tons depending on the stone and moisture.
- How deep should gravel be?
- Use 4–6 inches total for a driveway (often in layers over a base), 2–3 inches for a walking path, and 3–4 inches for drainage.
- Should I order gravel by the yard or the ton?
- Quarries sell both. Cubic yards measure volume and tons measure weight — use whichever your supplier prices by; the calculator gives you both.
